the first engine

The first usable two-stroke gas internal combustion engine was designed by French mechanic Etienne Lenoir in 1860. Engine power was 8.8 kW (11.97 hp). It was implemented as a single-cylinder horizontal double-acting machine running on a mixture of air and light gas with electrospark ignition from an external source.

principle of operation

The mechanical system of an internal combustion engine is designed so that its operation is divided into a sequence of periodic cycles, each of which consists of several cycles. One of the strokes is working, during this stroke the expansion of hot compressed gases leads to the movement of the piston, others perform auxiliary functions, including suction of the fuel-air mixture or air only, release of the working chamber from exhaust gases and combustion products and more. The most common designs of internal combustion engines are two-stroke and four-stroke.

Petroleum products are used as fuel for internal combustion engines: gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, etc. Internal combustion engines can also run on liquefied natural gas and alcohols: ethanol and methanol. Synthetic fuel for use in internal combustion engines is obtained from natural gas, coal or biomass through the Fischer-Tropsch process.

In the future, hydrogen can be used as a fuel, which has the advantage that the product of its combustion is water, but the use of hydrogen requires overcoming the technical problems associated with large volumes of required fuel tanks and other difficulties.

This result was achieved by increasing the combustion chambers, and some improvements to the pistons.
